Montreal’s Editions Pow Pow has launched an ambitious Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the translation of its line of French-language graphic novels for the English market.
Founder Luc Bossé has launched the campaign with the goal of raising $20,000 to translate three of his company’s bestselling comics into English, with stretch goals that include the translation of more of the 21 books he has published since starting up in 2010. The initial titles are Michel Hellman’s Mile End, Zviane’s For As Long As It Rains (Les deuxièmes), and Samuel Cantin’s Vile and Miserable (Vil et misérable). The stretch goals include at least two more titles and Bossé is offering tons of incentives, from buttons and t-shirts to prints and books by the likes of Guy Delisle and Pascal Girard. This is a pretty smart campaign and we should all laud Pow Pow for trying to get these books out to a wider audience. D+Q and Conundrum have had success with translations of Quebec BD (including the two cartoonists mentioned in the previous sentence) but why shouldn’t the original publisher of the work also take the opportunity to potentially quintuple its readership?
All the details are at the Kickstarter page, including the rest of the charming comic by Bossé, part of which you can see at the top of this post, as well as excerpts and trailers for the targeted books. I heartily recommend you check it out!
