by BK Munn
The Joe Shuster Awards are this weekend, taking place Sunday November 6 in London at the Forest City Comicon. A theme of the awards this year is the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first comic book published exclusively for the Canadian market, Better Comics #1 (1941), and several cartoonists from the short-lived 1940s heydey of Canuck funnybooks will be indeed be honoured by induction into the Shuster’s own hall of fame. See here for the list of awards nominees.
This is the third year for the London con and I think its first time its second year hosting the Shusters. Guests scheduled for the con include Jason loo, Richard Comely, Anthony Falcone, Kalman Andrasofszky, Ray Fawkes, Tony Kordos, and A full-size fan-built replica of Optimus Prime.
About The Joe Shuster Awards:
Established in 2004, The Joe Shuster Awards are Canada’s national award recognizing outstanding achievement in the creation of comic books, graphic novels and webcomics. The awards are named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman. The name is used with the approval of the Estate of Joe Shuster – Michael Catron, Estate Agent.
