Tons of stuff going on this weekend for the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival. Major international guests include Lewis Trondheim (Dungeon), Brigitte Findakly (Poppies of Iraq) and Yvan Alagbé (Yellow Negroes and Other Stories). Tons of other superstars as well, including Emily Carroll, Craig Thompson, Faith Erin Hicks, Farel Dalrymple, George Metzger, Ian Boothby, Julia Kaye, Jason Turner, Katherine Collins, Luke Ramsey, Miriam Libicki, and national treasure Marc Bell.
The hip highlight of the actual show is Lucky’s Lounge, a curated section named for famous comic book shop Lucky’s Books. Lucky’s is also hosting an art show for Eli Howey at the shop, and the opening is at 7pm Saturday.
As usual, there are tons of signings and panels. Here are a few highlights:
DIY Representation as Asians in North America on Saturday at 1:30 – 2:15 PM in the Performance Centre
A panel discussion and Q&A between five Asian-American/Asian-Canadian creators. How do we as East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and biracial Asian artists give form to each of our own unique voices and experiences through comics? Join Shing Yin Khor, Kristina Luu, Tajliya Jamal, Naomi Cui and Janice Liu as they discuss diversity, cultural intersection, and making comics through the lenses of Asians in North America.
We’re Here! Non-Binary Publishers and Creators Talk Shop on Saturday at 2:30 – 3:15 PM in the Performance Centre
At last, a panel all about non-binary publishers and creators and what we’re up to! Join us in making space to talk about the highs and lows, lessons and goals, of getting stuff made outside the gender binary. Panelists include Joamette Gil (Power & Magic Press), Hye Mardikian (Fortuna Media), Odera Igbokwe, Sfé R. Monster (Beyond Press), and Sunmi (Dandelion Wine Collective)
Ronald Wimberly and Yvan Alagbé in Conversation on Sunday at 11:30 AM – 12:15 PM in the Performance Centre
Join these two creators for a conversation around how their intersects and encounters race, experience and identity in a number of different ways.
