In tandem with day two of The Toronto Comics Art Festive, The Doug Wright Awards were handed out at a live event. The show presents four awards and added a new inductee the Giant of the North Hall of Fame.
The live feed of the events are imbedded here up top, but the coles notes are as follows! The first award of the night was the Egghead, honoring the best kids book it was given to Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth for ‘You Know, Sex‘, published by Triangle Square.
The second given was the Pigskin Peters Award, honoring the best small-press or micro-press book. It was given to Ivana Filipovich for her self-published ‘Where Have You Been‘?
The award for emerging talent called the Nipper went to ‘Shelterbelts‘ by Jonathan Dyck (published by Conundrum Press).
And the Doug Wright Award for best book went to Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton (published by Drawn & Quarterly).
Tribute was also made in memoriam to Scott Carruthers & Mandy Kujawa, along side the memorial induction of Henriette Valium to the Giants of the North hall of fame!
