“New” from Dave Sim

by BK Munn
“The test of any good fiction is that you should care something for the characters; the good to succeed, the bad to fail. The trouble with most fiction is that you want them all to land in hell together, as quickly as possible.”
-Mark Twain
Marxist-feminists the world over are rejoicing at the news that Dave Sim’s character Cerebus is going to Hell. At least, that is the seeming premise of a promised new comic book series from Sim set to debut this Fall. Cerebus Goes to Hell #0 marks the 40th anniversary of the debut of Sim’s self-published opus in 1977 and will lead into a 4-issue miniseries, co-illustrated by a guest-list of sundry hands. The series elevated the enfant terrible wunderkind Sim to the level of indy soothsayer but eventually drove him into the wilderness of political and religious extremism. Shorter than most manga series, Cerebus is still celebrated in some circles as a high-water mark in the art of the graphic novel. Here’s the solicitation copy:

The first new Cerebus comic since 2004! Where has Cerebus been since he died twelve years ago? Is he in hell? Purgatory? Limbo? Some strange 1980 disco with links to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Henry Kissinger? Some ancient Greek disco with links to Plato, Socrates, Aristotle? Some 1990s disco with links to The Stone Roses, the Happy Mondays, and Oasis? Is he stuck inside his own Cerebus Online Disco Twitter-feed? Well, wherever he is, he deserves it, so feel free to laugh at his misfortune! This one shot leads into the Cerebus In Hell? 4-issue mini-series in 2017 celebrating Cerebus‘ 40th-anniversary!
